Blue Campaign teaming up with the AIPHRC and NDPHA

On Oct. 6th we had the honor of hosting a visit for the Blue Campaign with Maria M. Odom, the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the head of this national initiative. The Blue campaign is focused on ending human trafficking. 
She and her team are forming a partnership with the North Dakota Public Health Association to raise awareness about and fight human trafficking in the public health sector and Indian country in North Dakota. They are also looking to work with our American Indian Public Health Resource Center in joint efforts to identify key issues and strategies to address human trafficking in ND.

Dr. Warne met with Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz


Last Friday I was able to meet with Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee along with a group of American Indian stakeholders and tribal leaders.  The DNC is committed to ensuring that voices of American Indians and Alaska Natives are heard in campaign efforts.  We discussed issues related to voter access and health care.

The Fall semester begins....


A busy week for Dr. Donald Warne.  The semester is underway!  He is teaching Leading and Managing Public Health Systems on Tuesday nights and Research Issues in Tribal Communities on Wednesday nights.  Also, as a member of the Regional Health Board of Directors, he attended a Board meeting on Thursday in Rapid City, SD.  On Friday with Hannabah Blue and Vanessa Tibbitts from NDSU, he presented on the need for Diversity and Inclusion in Health Professions Education for the Higher Education Technical Assistance Program (HE-TAP) for the Office of Minority Health at the University of Denver.  Now, back to Fargo!

Op-Ed written by Dr. Warne: Oral Oncology Parity Act good news for North Dakota

Oral oncology medications have been stifled by high copays for cancer patients. After a hard battle fought by numerous patient organizations and partners the Oral Oncology Parity Act has passed and new legislation will take effect August 1, 2015. North Dakota became the 38th state with the District of Columbia to enact such legislation.

Busy week!  Dr. Warne presented yesterday at Harvard School of Public Health on American Indian Health Policy.  Today he is in Atlanta for the American Cancer Society Board of Directors meeting, and tomorrow he meets with South Dakota Governor Dennis Dugaard in Pierre, SD to present the results of the South Dakota Health Survey.  Dr. Warne is the Co-Principal Investigator for the SDHS!

Helmsley Trust, N.D. Challenge grant fund endowed scholarships for NDSU American Indian public health program

Helmsley Charitable Trust has awarded North Dakota State University's Master of Public Health program $750,000 to create the first endowed scholarship fund in the nation for graduate students in American Indian public health. The state of North Dakota has provided an additional $375,000 through the North Dakota Higher Education Challenge Fund.
